House-Sitter Guide: Mail, Trash Days, and How to Use the Alarm System

Welcome and thank you for helping us while we’re away! Here’s everything you need to know to keep the house running smoothly. Don’t worry—everything is simple and explained step-by-step.

1. Picking Up the Mail

  • Mailbox Location:
    At the end of the driveway, next to the red brick planter.

  • Key Location:
    Hanging on the key hook inside the mudroom, labeled “Mail.”

  • Pickup Days:
    Ideally once a day, but at least every other day.

  • Put Mail Where?
    On the kitchen counter in the mail tray near the fridge.

2. Trash & Recycling

  • Trash Pickup Day:
    Tuesday mornings. Please roll the green bin to the curb Monday night.

  • Recycling Pickup Day:
    Friday mornings. Blue bin goes out Thursday night.

  • Bin Location:
    Outside, to the left of the garage.

  • What Goes Where:

    • Green = regular trash

    • Blue = recycling (no food or plastic bags, please!)

  • Extra Tip:
    If a bin is full, there are extra liners under the kitchen sink.

3. Alarm System

  • System Name:
    ADT (wall-mounted panel near the front door)

  • To Turn Off When You Arrive:

    1. Enter through the front door

    2. Use code 2580

    3. Press the green “OFF” button on the panel

  • To Arm When You Leave:

    1. Close all doors/windows

    2. Press the blue “AWAY” button

    3. Exit within 60 seconds

  • Emergency Contact (if alarm goes off):
    Our neighbor, Bill (555-321-8901)
    Or us: Lisa: 555-123-4567, Jake: 555-987-6543

  • Don’t Worry:
    If anything beeps or acts weird, just text us. It’s probably nothing.

Extra Info (Just in Case)

  • Wi-Fi name: SmithHome_5G
    Password: Daisy2023!

  • Power goes out? Flashlights are in the hallway closet.

  • Something leaks? Shutoff valve is in the garage by the water heater.

  • Thermostat: Set to 72°F is perfect, but feel free to adjust if you’re staying overnight.
